POINTtec: bauhaus - without ifs and buts

Many brand manufacturers adorn themselves with the "Bauhaus" label. This usually refers to a simple design language. So far, so good, and so popular. The "form follows function" philosophy of the Bauhaus design school in Dessau still resonates with many people's sense of form, so product designers often refer to it.

At POINTtec, the Bauhaus approach is a little different – much more concrete and closer to its historical origins.

The family business from Ismaning near Munich has been producing watches in Ruhla for many years; in 2019, it took over production with all employees at the traditional Thuringian location – and thus a very special building in which watches have been manufactured since 1929.

During the GDR era, millions of clocks and clock movements were manufactured here at the "VEB Uhrenwerk Ruhla." The same building, which has since been extensively restored, also houses the Ruhla Clock Museum, which is also continued by POINTtec.

What does this have to do with Bauhaus? Quite simply: the historic, listed production facility is clearly influenced by the Bauhaus philosophy. And here, especially on the fifth floor in the light-filled ambiance with a view of the Thuringian Forest, a relaxed atmosphere prevails, where, among other things, the POINTtec brand bauhaus timepieces have been created since 2020.

"Bauhaus-designed clocks have long been part of Pointtec's product range across all brands, and they have also been commissioned in Ruhla for just as long. But to now own the building, designed and constructed in 1929 by Jena architects Schreiter & Schlag according to the then-state-of-the-art Bauhaus principles, is truly something special," said POINTtec Managing Director Willi Birk at the time, explaining the founding of the Made-in-Germany Bauhaus brand.

The father-daughter duo Nathalie and Willi Birk jointly manage the company POINTtec.

"Bauhaus clocks from our own Bauhaus building – the history of our clocks has been enriched by a truly dazzling facet."

The bauhaus brand, by the way, draws not only on "form follows function" minimalism, but also on the colorful Bauhaus period. Recently, the bauhaus label has also been offering pilot's watches, which are listed under the bauhaus aviation line.

Among the highlights is the new "Eurofighter generation," which is appearing in its fifth version under the "bauhaus aviation" line. And the "Tornado" series, introduced last year, also sees a prominent addition.

The new “Titanium Horizon” features newly designed dials, and the classic “Dessau” series is getting a whole new wave of models that offer everything from quartz watches to chronographs and chronometers in the familiar design.

The icing on the cake is the “Smarty,” which combines clever smart features with the classic look of a traditional watch.
