With its "Doppio" collection, the Swiss watch brand Mondaine is presenting solar-powered watches for the first time. This demonstrates the brand's innovative spirit and underscores its commitment to environmental protection, which is already a top priority for the brand.

Swiss watchmaking between tradition and innovation

With over 70 years of Swiss craftsmanship, Mondaine's "Doppio" collection is a new example of its innovative spirit and dedicated commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. The watches are manufactured in the Mondaine factory in Biberist, which is itself powered by 80 percent solar energy. The watch brand has been committed to environmentally friendly and, if possible, climate-neutral production for years through various environmental and reforestation projects. Therefore, this new addition to the watch range fits particularly well with the brand's DNA.

The "Doppio" collection is the first Mondaine watch to feature state-of-the-art solar technology. It converts light into energy, eliminating the need for disposable batteries. The timepieces thus become a solution for watch enthusiasts who value sustainability and environmental awareness as much as design artistry and technical innovation. 

The “Doppio” collection was created through the collaboration of brothers André and Ronnie Bernheim, which combines traditional watchmaking with modern minimalism.

Doppio: A watch collection with duality

What makes the new "Doppio" collection so interesting is the duality that is evident in so many areas: the perspectives of the Bernheim brothers, tradition and innovation, design and function – the "Doppio" watches are available as a solar model, but also as a classic model with a quartz movement.

This duality is emphasized in the design through several features: The hour and minute hands are characterized by double lines, and the red second hand, modeled after the ladle of Mondaine's Swiss railway clocks, becomes an openwork design element that also symbolizes two lines and thus duality. The sapphire crystal that protects the watch is doubly domed, and the concave dial adds depth and curvature to the design. Thus, the "Doppio" collection embodies a blend of vintage charm and simple minimalism, making the watch design a timeless classic. 

How the solar clock works

Solar watches can be powered by both natural and artificial light, capturing it and converting it into energy, which is stored in a rechargeable battery. Just two minutes of sunlight is enough to restart a completely discharged watch movement. This means the movement will run reliably for a full day. 

A solar movement also means the battery doesn't need to be replaced regularly, making it a sustainable watch. On a full charge, Mondaine's solar watch runs for up to eight months, even in complete darkness.
