Diamond mining: De Beers and Endiama discover new kimberlite field in Angola

The De Beers Group and the Angolan diamond company Endiama have discovered a new kimberlite field in Angola. Diamonds are an accessory mineral in this rock, so the site could become the site for a new diamond mine. This is the first discovery of this kind for De Beers in more than 30 years.

Milestone for De Beers

In Angola, the De Beers Group and the Angolan diamond company Endiama discovered a new kimberlite field. Kimberlite can contain diamonds and is therefore a promising indicator for a potential new diamond mine.

The area was surveyed aerially in March 2025, and kimberlite was finally discovered during drilling in July. For De Beers and Endiama, this represents a significant breakthrough in the development of new diamond mining areas—in De Beers' case, it is the first successful discovery in more than 30 years. Further drilling and ground geophysical surveys are planned for the coming months. Laboratory analyses are expected to determine the type of kimberlite and thus provide further insight into the potential presence of diamonds.

CEO sees great potential for the future

The De Beers Group signed a contract with the government of Angola in April 2022, and a memorandum of understanding was signed in February 2024. This confirms De Beers and the Angolan government's desire to maintain a long-term partnership and promote Angola's significant potential as a diamond supplier. Al Cook, CEO of De Beers, said in a statement:

"We believe Angola is one of the best places in the world to prospect for diamonds, and this discovery confirms our optimism. It impressively demonstrates what can be achieved through partnership, and I commend President Lourenco and his government for all the work they have done to increase transparency, implement international standards, and create a business-friendly environment—all of which has enabled us to return to Angola and explore for new deposits. We are very excited about the role De Beers can play in unlocking the country's great potential—both above and below ground."
