New hand-wound movement for the "Metro" from Nomos Glashütte

“I want to design things that seem familiar to people, even though they are new.” That’s what designer Mark Braun said in 2021 about the then new, 41-millimeter-measuring “Metro”, which he had designed for and with Nomos Glashütte.

The Nomos “Metro” family, first launched in 2014, now comprises 13 members. All originate from Braun's creative mind. “The dial's language is complex, yet archetypal and instantly comprehensible. The concentration of the main numerals on the minutes is a metaphor for precision in today's world,” the product designer explains on the occasion of the latest “Metro” model.

Another unique feature lies in the history of the "Metro". It was the first watch that Nomos equipped with its own assortment: the Nomos swing system. Only a few manufacturers worldwide are capable of producing the oscillating heart of each watch themselves.

The new "Metro 38 Date" also has a familiar feel, yet offers a genuine innovation: the DUW 4601, Nomos Glashütte's latest hand-wound movement. It naturally incorporates the company's proprietary Swing System, features a convenient quick-set date function, and boasts an extended power reserve of 52 hours. It can be viewed through the sapphire crystal case back.

“I like mechanics,” says Mark Braun, who also works as a professor of product design in Saarbrücken. “It makes competence visible.” Anyone who wears a mechanical watch consciously assumes responsibility for its value and longevity.

"A mechanical watch is an instrument, but even more so an expression of an attitude towards the world. How do I want to live, what do I want to surround myself with?"

Visually, the new "Metro" features the popular 38.5-millimeter format and the familiar, generously sized date window at 6 o'clock on the white silver-plated dial. The stepped hands are reminiscent of the silhouette of the Empire State Building, blue and black dot indices mark the hours with appropriate succinctness, while the minutes are indicated by numerals and the small seconds is positioned above the date.

With its moderate size and a height of just 7.8 millimeters for its stainless steel case, which is water-resistant to 5 bar, this "Metro" is a watch for almost any wrist. It is secured with a black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan leather strap.
