Klaus Botta: 40 years of the "UN" = 40 years of a sovereign concept of time

Forty years ago, Klaus Botta introduced the "UNO" – and with it, his philosophy on how to deal with time. Since then, he has successfully developed watches that make this concept of time accessible to everyone – since 1999 under his name Botta Design.

Botta Design watches differ fundamentally from classic wristwatches: no distractions, no useless accessories – but a sovereign relationship to time.

When you think of a dress watch, you don't immediately think of a single-hand watch? Then take a look at the latest version of the "UNO" wristwatch model from Botta Design: This timepiece combines the virtues of a dress watch – flat, minimalist design and functionality reduced to the essentials – with today's modern watchmaking.

However, the topic of dress watches is not at the top of founder and owner Klaus Botta's list of inspirations. Instead, the industrial and product designer initially asked himself the following question:

How little does it take to truly understand time?

His answer was a single-hand watch. For him, it went far beyond mere design aspects; it was and still is about a very specific conception of time:

„"It's a great paradox of our modern world: the clock, accurate to the second, makes us slaves to the moment. It tempts us to push everything to the limit: deadlines, appointments, connections. The consequences: stress instead of sovereignty, and a need for control instead of serenity. We've become accustomed to the complicated – and forgotten how to be simple."“

Klaus Botta

This relaxed and confident approach to time has absolutely nothing to do with idleness. Otherwise, Botta watches wouldn't have been successful on the market for decades.

The strenght is to be found in serenity

This sums up Klaus Botta's business philosophy. At the same time, this often-used phrase becomes an authentic description of his relaxed approach to time. A way of life where one isn't driven by the clock's display, but rather enjoys its appearance.

And let's be honest: In the rarest of cases is time measurement accurate to the minute or even second necessary. Exceptions include things like boiling an egg – where, as we all know, perception can be deceiving – and competitive sports. However, in the latter, wristwatches aren't used anyway, but rather much more precise electronic measuring methods.

In everyday life, meticulous timekeeping, further amplified by the ubiquitous mobile phone, offers no advantages whatsoever. Have you ever been reprimanded for arriving 73 seconds late to a meeting? And even an atomic clock on the German railway system wouldn't guarantee an uninterrupted and consistently punctual travel experience.

Four decades of masterful handling of time

Klaus Botta's single-hand watches have taken all these insights into account for 40 years by using a maximally simplified display to focus on the essentials: the value of time.

The "Uno" model exemplifies the purist, minimalist design language, its function reflected in a logical yet intuitive time display. This is achieved with a single hand, which completes a full rotation every twelve or 24 hours. The hour markers and the scale in 5- or 10-minute increments provide a time display that is both sufficiently precise and reassuring for everyday use.

The UN – a symbol of a new understanding of time

Klaus Botta's first watch line, launched in 1986, aptly bears the name UNO. "From the very beginning, the UNO was a conscious counter-design to the increasing complexity of the watchmaking world: one hand, one clear scale, a new understanding of time. Not a simplification born of necessity, but of conviction. The watch became a manifesto for deceleration, clarity, and self-determination," he recalls.

And this lived experience of time has remained unchanged for him to this day. His watches are not driving timekeepers, but rather interpret time as a personal, self-determined living space: they don't dictate, they accompany. They measure no more than is necessary.

„Time is our most valuable asset. With the ‚UNO‘ we wanted to make time tangible again as what it is: individual, subjective, vibrant,“ emphasizes Klaus Botta and clarifies:

„"Our watches are not instruments of control, but tools for consciously managing one's own rhythm."“

The „UNO Single-Pointer“ for the 40th anniversary

The Botta anniversary year 2026 is themed "40 Years of the Modern Single-Hand Watch." Accompanying events and content are planned that explore the culture of time, design, and conscious perception. "Not as marketing, but as a dialogue," says Klaus Botta.

The first to be released is a reissue of the original "UNO" with a 12-hour display from 1986. In its seventh evolutionary stage, it naturally incorporates modern watchmaking features. These include titanium cases and state-of-the-art Swiss-made movements.

The anniversary "UNO" is created, like all models of the brand, in the company's own design studio in Königstein. The individual preferences and budgets of the customers are always taken into account.

All watches in all lines from Botta Design are available in various versions: automatic and quartz, pure or coated titanium, and a wide range of different straps allows for an individual watch to suit one's personal sense of time.

The anniversary "UNO" is available in a 44mm size with the Sellita SW200 elaboré automatic movement (with date) and as a quartz version with a 40mm diameter and a Ronda movement (without date). Both cases are crafted from tri-titanium in various colors and, at 9.5 and 6.6mm thick respectively, are exceptionally slim, easily fulfilling the dress watch requirements mentioned earlier. Buyers can personalize their "UNO" with a wide selection of leather and metal straps. (RRP from €550 (quartz) and from €1,590 (automatic))

PS: For those who want to integrate a relaxed approach to time into their home ambiance, Botta Design offers single-hand wall clocks in a stylishly minimalist design. And for those who prefer a more precise time display: Botta also offers clocks with more than one hand – a unique way of telling time is guaranteed here as well.
