Cartier Baignoire Clous de Paris: Gold Meets Geometric Design

For the first time, Cartier has completely encrusted its oval Baignoire with the Clous de Paris pattern. The new jewelry watch features a 24.6 × 19.3-millimeter case that flows seamlessly into a yellow gold bangle. In addition to the solid gold version, a second version set with a total of 271 diamonds will be released. Both models are scheduled to be available in Cartier boutiques starting in November 2026.

Clous de Paris as a continuous surface

The Clous de Paris motif consists of regularly arranged, pyramid-shaped raised elements. On the new Baignoire, this motif is not limited to the dial or individual case components: the pattern extends across the bezel, the case, and the dial. As a result, the strict geometry of the motif contrasts with the soft, oval lines of the Baignoire.

The craftsmanship is particularly challenging at the transitions. The pattern must follow the varying curves without compromising the watch’s proportions or its cohesive form. To achieve this, Cartier shapes the 750 yellow gold and then polishes the surfaces by hand.

Two versions in yellow gold

In the first version, the yellow gold remains fully visible. The monochromatic design makes the texture itself the most important element of the watch. Even the dial forgoes the Roman numerals typical of Cartier, opting instead for two simple gold-colored hands.

The second version combines textured gold with two different types of settings. The dial features 100 brilliant-cut diamonds in a snow-setting. An additional 171 diamonds in reverse settings adorn the case and bangle. The setting thus does not simply form a uniform pavé surface but creates a contrast between the dense dial and the individual stones on the Clous de Paris texture.

Baignoire: From a Shaped Watch to a Jewelry Watch

The origins of the Baignoire date back to the 1920s; the collection received its current name in 1973. The name refers to the bathtub-like contour of the oval case. Over the decades, this shape remained constant, while Cartier repeatedly altered the proportions, bracelets, and settings.

The bangle version introduced in 2023 placed a particularly strong emphasis on the piece’s character as a piece of jewelry. The new Clous de Paris version takes this approach a step further: it is not the movement or an additional complication that defines this new model, but rather the way in which the case, dial, and bracelet merge into a single, cohesive surface.
