INSIGHT-RADAR: MB&F, Porsche Design, and Truly Precious
In the latest issue of INSIGHT-RADAR, mechanical object art, new spaces for automotive collectors, and practical support for responsible sourcing come together: MB&F and Caran d’Ache are transforming a historic pencil sharpener into a gorilla, Porsche Design is planning private vehicle studios in the U.S., and Truly Precious is launching a free hands-on program for jewelry companies.
MB&F × Caran d’Ache: A Pencil Sharpener Becomes a Sculpture
To mark the 15th anniversary of the M.A.D.Gallery, MB&F and Caran d’Ache have reimagined the Swiss pencil sharpener, which has been in production since 1933. The GorillaSharpener remains fully functional but now stands on sturdy legs made of stainless steel and cast iron. This mechanical object was designed by MB&F designer Maximilian Maertens.
The dial features the shade of blue called “Alpine Frost.” A limited run of 300 pieces will be produced; the price is 925 euros plus tax. The collaboration also supports the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Through the symbolic adoption of the historic Pablo group, MB&F is contributing to conservation and research efforts for mountain gorillas. Porsche Design Concours: Private Studios for Car Collectors
Porsche Design and the Newgard Development Group are developing a new ownership and club concept for car collectors in the United States. The first locations are set to open in West Palm Beach and Dallas. A total of 44 private vehicle studios are planned, ranging in size from approximately 250 to 560 square meters.
The units belong to their respective owners and feature, among other things, a mezzanine, a bathroom, a bar, and air conditioning. A shared clubhouse complements the concept with dining, wellness, padel, coworking, and event spaces. Contrary to what the name might suggest, Porsche Design Concours is open to collectors of all car brands. The first two locations are scheduled to open in 2028.
Truly Precious Launches the Conscious Craft Lab
Truly Precious, in partnership with the Alliance for Responsible Mining and the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, is launching a free pilot program on responsible sourcing. Up to 20 small and medium-sized jewelry companies will work on their own supply chains over several months, develop supplier questionnaires, and create a customized responsible sourcing roadmap.
The fully digital program will run through early 2027. The five most active participants will also receive personalized mentoring from experts at ARM and Truly Precious. Interested companies can apply using the application form or contact Truly Precious directly at info@trulyprecious.org.
