Rumors of a Takeover of the Watch Retailer Watches of Switzerland
Watches of Switzerland Group (WoSG), which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, is one of the world’s largest retailers of luxury watches and jewelry. The company is currently in the spotlight because the media are reporting on possible takeover talks.
Shares of the British company WoSG, which is listed on the FTSE 250, have risen 55 percent this year to around 7.20 pounds. Nevertheless, the stock continues to trade at less than half its 2022 high. The stock price had plummeted in 2023 after Rolex, its main supplier, acquired the Swiss watch and jewelry retailer Bucherer—a move that some analysts viewed as a threat to the business relationship between Rolex and Watches of Switzerland.
The Reuters news agency is now reporting, citing three people familiar with the matter, that talks regarding potential takeover bids have been held in recent months. The goal is to delist the luxury watch retailer from the stock exchange.
According to the report, both financial and strategic investors have expressed interest in the company. Watches of Switzerland stated, according to Reuters, that it does not comment on rumors or speculation. Rolex also declined to comment. watchesofswitzerland.com
Patek Philippe: Exhibition Marking the 50th Anniversary of the Nautilus
Introduced in 1976, the Nautilus marked a break with the classic conventions of luxury watchmaking in many ways: starting with the choice of material—stainless steel, a metal previously uncommon for watches in this category—and extending to the atypical style of the case, which was neither round nor rectangular but featured an octagonal bezel with rounded corners.
In fact, this design was not created solely for the sake of originality. Rather, the shape was dictated by its function as a waterproof watch case, inspired by the principle of a ship’s porthole. You can discover these and other secrets of the Nautilus, designed by the legendary watch designer Gérald Genta, in the special exhibition “1976–2026 Nautilus—50 Years of an Icon of Sporty Elegance.”
The retrospective traces the eventful history of the “Nautilus” using the manufacturer’s historical archives and a selection of models. The exhibition will be on view at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva through early 2027. patek.com
