Watches & Wonders 20205: The watch face as a canvas

Plain-coloured dials will always be in vogue. Increasingly, however, designers are also expressing their creativity and imagination in detail on the dial. Be it to express functions such as the moon phase or second time zone in an attractive way, or to stage a view of the infinite expanse of the universe on the very limited space of a dial or art in enamel. The time sometimes almost fades into the background.

Laurent Ferrier – “Classic Traveler Globe Night Blue”: The name of this reinterpretation of a 2016 model from the brand sounds promising – and it lives up to its promise. This is primarily due to the engraved enamel dial in white gold with a handcrafted, slate-gray hour ring. The miniature painting depicts the Earth at night.

The continents are covered in opaque blue enamel with gold accents. They are surrounded by oceans of deep blue enamel. Functionally, it offers globetrotters two time zones.

The 41-millimeter white gold case houses the automatic caliber LF 230.02 with a 72-hour power reserve. (RRP CHF 90,000)

Arnold & Son – “Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold Year of the Snake”: 2025 is the Year of the Wooden Snake in the Chinese calendar. This source of inspiration is unmistakable in the series, comprising eight rose gold pieces. The handcrafted 18-carat rose gold snake, mounted on blue aventurine glass, appears almost alive, and the mother-of-pearl moon, coated with Superluminova, is also designed with particularly realistic shadows.

It is framed by the constellations of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia, which are also illuminated.

The hand-wound A&S1512 movement with a 90-hour power reserve ensures functional precision. A second moon phase display on the caseback allows for quick and precise adjustment of the in-house caliber.

Piaget – “Piaget Altiplano High Jewelery Métiers d'Art”: You should take some time to gaze at the dial of this extraordinary timepiece, as there's much to discover. Diamonds, blue sapphires, and skeletonization meet artfully crafted enamel.

Enameler Anita Porchet designed a sophisticated motif in shades of blue, green, and violet with a cloisonné grand feu enamel that looks like a painting.

The Swiss-made 1201D1 caliber ensures precision in the 40-millimeter white gold case.

Bell & Ross – “BR-03 Astro”: Time in zero gravity – that's the motto of this new model, limited to 999 pieces. With the Earth at its center, surrounded by the Moon and Mars, Bell & Ross pays tribute to the blue planet and showcases its aviation DNA in a completely different way. Measuring 41 x 11.4 millimeters, the black ceramic case is water-resistant to 10 bar and features a blue aventurine plate as the dial, or rather, the universe.

The orbits of Mars, the Moon, and a satellite around Earth are visible. These satellites are actually the hands for hours, minutes, and seconds.

The BR.CAL-327 automatic movement with a 54-hour power reserve provides power and precision. (RRP €4,990)
