Dahlinger – A prime example of a hidden champion

Anyone who holds a fine watch, a piece of jewelry, or an exclusive spirit in their hands, stylishly packaged, is often also holding a piece from Dahlinger—without knowing it. The name Dahlinger stands worldwide for high-quality packaging and presentation solutions in the premium segment, yet is hardly known outside of the industry and certainly not among end consumers. A prime example of a hidden champion—and in this case, a double one.

A recent study by Dortmund University of Applied Sciences under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Buechler identified the Black Forest region as a hotspot for hidden champions. Forty-four companies from the region meet the criteria – an outstanding nationwide figure of 10 hidden champions per 100,000 inhabitants. Dahlinger is the only award-winning company in Lahr, placing it among an elite group of medium-sized enterprises whose reputation extends far beyond their regional significance.

What makes Dahlinger special,

is the combination of design excellence with industrial performance. Founded in 1871, the family-owned company develops customized packaging solutions for international luxury brands – from elegant cases for jewelry and watches to sophisticated presentation boxes for premium spirits. These products are more than just packaging; they contribute significantly to brand perception and the purchasing experience.

The key figures from the Black Forest study speak volumes: Hidden champions in the region achieve an average turnover of €337 million and employ 1,394 people. Revenue per employee is €241,000 – an international benchmark that even eclipses DAX-listed companies.

"We are proud to contribute to this remarkable achievement in the Black Forest Power Region and to be the only company in Lahr to receive this award," explains Bernd Dahlinger, Managing Partner. "This recognition motivates us to continue consistently on our path: with innovative strength, responsibility, and a passion for quality."

Dahlinger thus symbolizes the quiet strength of German medium-sized businesses: globally successful, regionally rooted – and in the best sense of the word: indispensable, even if hardly any end customer knows the name.
