In Memoriam Jean-Marie Schaller: The founder of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet has passed away

On May 16, 2026, Jean-Marie Schaller passed away at the age of just 66. He was the founder, CEO, and creative director of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet. The Swiss watch brand is named after the French watchmaker Louis Moinet (1768–1853).

Jean-Marie Schaller once said: “We are a genuine brand with a genuine tradition. It is important to me that we honor the legacy of Louis Moinet—who was both an artist and a brilliant watchmaker—and write new chapters in his story as if he were still alive.”

Now it is up to others to carry on the legacy of his watch brand, founded in 2004—above all, his family. The company writes:

“His enthusiasm and dedication inspired those closest to him. Micaela, his wife, supported him from the very beginning with unwavering commitment and a deep belief in their shared project. As an expression of the entire family’s deep connection to this true life’s work, Jean-Marie could also count on the support of his daughter Raphaëlle, who stood by his side in the endeavors that were particularly close to his heart.

Over the past six years, Jean-Marie has shared this passion day after day with his son Nathanaël, who has worked side by side with him at Les Ateliers Louis Moinet. Over the years, he has passed on to him his philosophy, his creative vision, and the freedom now needed to write the next chapter of this story—guided by Nathanaël’s own sensibility and talent.

Today, Nathanaël continues on this path—supported by a team deeply committed to the values that have driven Les Ateliers Louis Moinet for over twenty years. Kurt Kupper, a member of the Board of Directors and acting CEO, will remain in his role and contribute his experience and vision to the future ambitions of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet.

Louis Moinet is a small, independent Swiss watch brand that specializes in intricate mechanical watches produced in limited editions and appeals primarily to collectors. It is particularly well known for its tourbillons, astronomical themes, and the use of unusual materials such as meteorite fragments.
