G-SHOCK MRG-D5000: Blue Sapphire Crystal for the Digital Icon
With the MRG-D5000-BDR, G-SHOCK brings its iconic square shape into a new world of materials. The entire bezel is made of blue sapphire crystal, and the case back also features this material. To achieve this, CASIO developed a multi-part, screwless construction that combines this hard yet brittle material with the shock resistance typical of G-SHOCK. Only 20 pieces will be produced worldwide.
The price also sends a message: the MRG-D5000 costs 80,000 euros. This puts a classic digital watch in a price range that, in the watch market, is typically associated with intricate mechanics, precious metals, or extensive gemstone settings.
Sapphire glass as part of the design

Blue sapphire crystal defines the look of the MRG-D5000. In addition to its high hardness, the material possesses a distinctive optical depth. Depending on the angle of the light, the effect shifts between a transparent blue and more intense reflections. Gold-colored vacuum-coated lettering on the display provides a warm contrast.
The technical challenge lay in the construction of the case. CASIO analyzed the forces acting on the sapphire components during an impact and developed the MR-G Multi-Guard structure to address this. The case and bezel consist of several individual parts that are connected without screws. This design protects the sapphire crystal and maintains the shock resistance that is central to G-SHOCK.

G-Shock MRG-D5000
This makes the MRG-D5000 the first G-SHOCK in which blue sapphire crystal is integrated into the shock-resistant construction in this way—and this is precisely where the challenge lies. Although sapphire is highly durable, it is also brittle.
The case back also features this material. Blue sapphire crystal is integrated there as well; each of the 20 pieces bears its own unique serial number. The DURA-SOFT band echoes the familiar brick-pattern design of early G-SHOCK models.

Gallium Tough Solar is used for power supply. The technology is designed to be highly resistant to intense light exposure and powers the watch using light energy.
80,000 euros—where is this digital clock?
A look at G-SHOCK’s recent history shows just how unusual this price point is.
In 2019, CASIO released the G-D5000-9 “Pure Gold.” This classic Square G-SHOCK was crafted entirely from 18-karat gold. Only 35 pieces were produced, and the price was around 70,000 U.S. dollars.
Even higher prices have already been achieved within the brand, though under different circumstances. The unique G-D001, crafted from 18-karat yellow gold, was auctioned at Phillips in 2023 for $400,050. It was a one-of-a-kind piece created for a charity auction and not a standard production model.
Even outside the G-SHOCK brand, there were digital watches priced in the six-figure range. In 2018, TAG Heuer unveiled the Connected Modular 45 Full Diamond for 190,000 Swiss francs. Its case and bracelet were made of 18-karat white gold, and it was set with 589 diamonds totaling 23.35 carats.
The 15 thus occupies an unusual position. Its price of 80,000 euros cannot be explained by a solid gold case or extensive diamond setting. The focus is on the blue sapphire crystal, the specially developed case structure, the limited production run, and the high level of craftsmanship.
Blue Rose: Sapphire crystal in three shades
The MRG-D5000 is the flagship model of the Blue Rose collection. Two other models take up the theme of blue sapphire crystal and adapt it to different price ranges.
The MRG-B5000SA-2DR takes the material in a more metallic direction. Faceted blue sapphire elements totaling two carats are set on the top and bottom of the case, adding additional light reflections to the angular design.

The MRG-B5000SA-2DR continues the blue sapphire theme in a more metallic style. Faceted sapphire elements totaling two carats are set on the top and bottom of the case, adding additional light reflections to the angular design.
The bezel is made of Cobarion, a very hard cobalt-chromium alloy with high corrosion resistance and a bright, almost platinum-like luster. The case and bezel also feature a blue AIP (Arc Ion Plating) coating. In this vacuum process, a very thin, firmly adhering layer is applied to the metal surface. It creates the intense blue color and visually unifies the different materials.
The GMW-B5000SB-1A2ER takes a more understated approach. Four blue sapphire crystals are set on the front of the bezel, adding subtle accents to the familiar all-metal case.

30 Years of MR-G
These new models are being released to mark MR-G’s 30th anniversary. CASIO introduced the premium line in 1996. Within the G-SHOCK universe, it is known for its high-quality materials, complex case designs, and superior craftsmanship.
The MRG-D5000 takes this approach to new extremes. The basic design remains instantly recognizable as a G-SHOCK. Sapphire crystal and the Multi-Guard construction transform the watch’s materials, manufacturing, and ultimately its positioning.
Price and Availability
The G-SHOCK MRG-D5000-BDR is limited to 20 pieces worldwide and will be available starting in December 2026 for 80,000 euros.
The MRG-B5000SA-2DR will be released in a limited edition of 500 pieces and will go on sale in November 2026 for 6,600 euros. The GMW-B5000SB-1A2ER will also be available starting in November for 779 euros.
With the MRG-D5000, G-SHOCK demonstrates just how far the familiar digital design can be taken. The blue sapphire crystal defines its look. What truly sets it apart, however, is the technical solution that makes its use in a shock-resistant G-SHOCK possible in the first place.
