Laco Replica 55: The Historic Observation Watch Returns
Laco is bringing the Replica 55 back into its lineup. The new edition closely follows the design of the 1940s observation watches: 55 millimeters in diameter, dark sandblasted steel, a large onion-shaped crown, and dial variants Type A and B. Inside, the watch is powered by the Laco 97 hand-wound movement, which has been modified to feature a central seconds hand.

Size based on a specific task
The design is based on the watch’s original function as a navigation instrument. The historic observation watch was intended to be quick and easy to read even under challenging conditions. Laco was one of five manufacturers that produced such watches according to military specifications. Today’s replica thus revisits a chapter of the company’s own history.
Model A features a classic hour scale. On Model B, the large minute numerals take center stage, while the hours are arranged on a smaller inner circle. Both dials remain matte black and feature no printed brand logo. Thermally blued steel hands with Super-LumiNova C3 provide contrast.
Onion crown, firm ribs, and a closed band
The dark, sandblasted stainless steel case is engraved with “FL23883” on the side. Straight lugs, a double-domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and the solid steel caseback reinforce the watch’s instrument-like character. It is water-resistant to five atmospheres; the design also includes protection against magnetic fields.
The brown pilot’s leather strap is 26 millimeters wide and riveted to sturdy bars. Its closed design is pulled over the hand to put it on. This detail, which is unusual today, follows the historical model and was intended to prevent the watch from falling off when removed.
From the ETA base movement to the central seconds hand
The Laco 97 is based on the ETA 6497.1. Its small seconds hand, which was originally off-center, is converted to a central seconds hand in Pforzheim. Laco then adjusts and tests each movement. Features include an Incabloc shock protection system, a swan-neck fine-adjustment mechanism, and a seconds-stop function.

Each watch is identified by a unique serial number on the case and back. On the inside of the solid case back, Laco reproduces the typical markings found on historic observation watches.
Also as a uniquely aged heirloom
In addition to the standard versions with models A and B, there are “heirloom” editions. For these, the case, dial, and strap are hand-finished to give them a weathered look. The variations are intentional: each piece has its own unique finish and patina.

The standard Replica 55 costs 3,950 euros, while the heirloom edition costs 5,490 euros. The new series launches at the end of October; on its current product page, Laco lists spring 2027 as the release date for the heirloom models. The watches are delivered in a wooden case with a vintage look.
