Laurent Ferrier Iceberg: Tourbillon discreet

The tourbillon is often the center of attention, but not in this case: a light-colored dial, a titanium case, and a small seconds hand—the Grand Sport Tourbillon Iceberg reveals its most intricate mechanics only when turned over. Laurent Ferrier pairs the new opaline-white color with blue highlights with the hand-wound caliber LF619.01. Its tourbillon, featuring two counter-rotating balance springs, remains hidden on the dial side.

A sports watch with a history

The Grand Sport Tourbillon launched the Geneva-based brand’s sports line in 2019. The connection to motorsports is a personal one: In 1979, Laurent Ferrier and his future business partner François Servanin, together with François Trisconi, finished third overall in a Porsche 935 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Four decades later, they translated this shared history into a watch featuring flowing case contours and a sophisticated hand-wound movement.

The initial steel models were followed by rose gold versions and, in 2023, the Grand Sport Tourbillon Pursuit in titanium with a salmon-colored dial. The new Iceberg replaces this version. It primarily changes the color effect: Instead of a warm gradient, Laurent Ferrier opts for an almost white background that takes on a bluish hue depending on the angle of the light.

Titanium and Soft Contours

The case and three-link integrated bracelet are made of Grade 5 titanium. The diameter is 44 millimeters, and the thickness is 13.40 millimeters. According to the manufacturer, the watch weighs 118 grams with the bracelet. The cushion-shaped bezel meets a tonneau-shaped case middle; satin-finished sections and polished edges define the generous surfaces. A domed sapphire crystal continues the curves. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters.

The teardrop-shaped hour markers and the distinctive Assegai hands are crafted from white gold with a dark ruthenium finish. Bright luminous material enhances readability. The small seconds sub-dial is located at six o’clock. The tone-on-tone lettering is understated on the dial, allowing its surface and the sculpted hands to take center stage.

The LF619.01 caliber measures 31.60 millimeters in diameter and 5.57 millimeters in height. It consists of 188 components with 23 jewels, operates at three hertz (or 21,600 vibrations per hour), and offers approximately 80 hours of power reserve. It is wound by hand using the easy-to-grip, rounded crown.

Its unique feature lies in two balance springs mounted in opposite directions. Their lateral forces are designed to counteract one another, thereby stabilizing the rate. The tourbillon complements this approach by using its rotation to average out positional deviations in vertical orientations. Both elements thus serve a chronometric purpose, while the display on the front remains deliberately minimalist.

Horizontally satin-finished, ruthenium-treated bridges define the view from the back. On the tourbillon mechanism, mirror-polished surfaces meet 30 hand-finished inner angles. Added to this is a long hairspring modeled after historical designs, which makes the hand-winding experience audible as well. The Iceberg thus carries forward the core concept of the Grand Sport: a sporty-looking case that houses a traditionally constructed and meticulously finished movement.
