Hands-on: Maurice Lacroix AIKON-IC Frozen Carbon

Frozen Carbon, black ceramic, and the AIKON’s distinctive design language: With the AIKON-IC Frozen Carbon, Maurice Lacroix presents a particularly bold interpretation of a collection that blends sporty styling with elegance. In our hands-on review, we wore the 43-millimetre automatic watch with two different straps and examined how design, materials, and mechanics come together in the new AIKON.

A familiar silhouette, reimagined

The AIKON has long been one of Maurice Lacroix’s best-known collections. Its distinctive bezel, sharply defined case flanks and blend of sporty and elegant elements make it instantly recognisable. With the AIKON-IC, the Swiss brand builds on this design language while introducing new design accents.

Our test watch, the AIKON-IC Frozen Carbon with reference number AC6008-SSL20-431-2, stands out in particular for its textured dial with purple accents. Combined with black ceramic and stainless steel, it creates a modern look that casts the familiar AIKON silhouette in a new light.

The Dial: Frozen Carbon with Purple Accents

The real highlight of the watch is undoubtedly its dial. Maurice Lacroix has opted for Frozen Carbon, whose irregular surface texture lends it a remarkable depth. Subtle purple accents complement the material’s distinctive structure, creating a sense of depth that shifts with the light. Unlike a traditional sunburst finish, the visual effect comes from the irregular patterns within the Frozen Carbon itself rather than uniform reflections.

Rhodium-plated hour markers and hands with white Super-LumiNova ensure excellent readability. The purple seconds hand subtly echoes the colour scheme, while the date window at three o’clock serves as a practical addition. We particularly like how the unusual material takes centre stage without disrupting the clean layout of the dial.

The Case: Stainless Steel Meets Ceramic

At 43 mm in diameter, the AIKON-IC has a noticeable presence on the wrist. However, its comparatively slim profile of 11 millimetres ensures well-balanced proportions. Alternating brushed and polished surfaces emphasise the case’s distinctive geometry, while the black ceramic bezel provides a contrasting frame for the Frozen Carbon dial.

The crown’s black ceramic cap echoes the bezel. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial, while a sapphire crystal case back offers a view of the movement. With a water resistance of 10 ATM, the watch is also equipped for versatile everyday use.

One Watch, Two Distinct Looks

One of the most interesting aspects of our hands-on experience was seeing how the watch’s character changed with each strap. The AIKON-IC Frozen Carbon comes standard with a black bi-rubber strap featuring a textured nylon-look insert. It echoes the dark accents of the ceramic bezel and underscores the watch’s modern, sporty character. This also allows the Frozen Carbon dial to take centre stage.

Switching to the stainless steel bracelet gives the watch a noticeably different character. The metallic surfaces extend the design of the case and give the AIKON-IC a more elegant, cohesive look. The dial remains the focal point of the design, but now blends into a more classic overall look. We liked both versions in their own way, precisely because they showcase different sides of the same watch.

Maurice Lacroix’s ML Easy Change System allows compatible straps and bracelets to be exchanged without tools, making it easy to adapt the watch to different occasions. A practical detail that adds to its everyday versatility.

The Movement: Swiss Automatic Calibre with a 60-Hour Power Reserve

Visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback is the automatic calibre ML1000. It offers a 60-hour power reserve, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and features 26 jewels. In addition to hours, minutes, and seconds, it displays the date at the 3 o’clock position.

While the Frozen Carbon dial and black ceramic bezel define the watch’s contemporary appearance, the exhibition caseback reveals the mechanical movement that powers it.

On the Wrist: Sporty, Distinctive and Versatile

Despite its 43 mm diameter, the AIKON-IC feels less bulky than its dimensions might suggest, thanks to its relatively slim case profile. The striking bezel and broad case contours remain distinctly prominent, however. Those who prefer compact watches should therefore be sure to assess the proportions on their own wrist.

The bi-rubber strap lends itself particularly well to a sporty, everyday look, while the stainless steel bracelet also makes the watch an appealing choice for more elegant occasions. For us, this versatility is one of the strengths of the AIKON-IC collection.

Our Verdict

The Maurice Lacroix AIKON-IC Frozen Carbon demonstrates how successfully a familiar design language can be reinterpreted through unconventional materials. The textured Frozen Carbon dial, complemented by subtle purple accents, gives the watch a distinctive personality while preserving the unmistakable character of the AIKON.

With its confident design, the AIKON-IC will particularly appeal to watch enthusiasts who appreciate a noticeable presence on the wrist, distinctive materials and carefully considered details. It strikes an appealing balance between contemporary styling and understated elegance, making it equally interesting beyond purely casual occasions. For those drawn to modern, sporty yet elegant timepieces, the AIKON-IC offers a compelling combination of distinctive design, Swiss automatic watchmaking and everyday versatility.
