Formex Unveils Its First In-House Caliber

Formex, an independent Swiss watch brand founded in 1999, has unveiled its first in-house caliber. The automatic movement with a micro-rotor makes its debut in the new “Aria” chronometer.

The Formex FX01 caliber, developed by Horage based on its in-house K2 caliber, makes its debut in the limited-edition “Aria”—a 40-millimeter watch with a case just 6.9 millimeters thick—which is worn on an integrated titanium bracelet. Each of the 100 pieces—the maximum number to be produced in 2026—weighs just 78 grams. The textured dial is available in green, anthracite, and blue.

“As a relatively small, independent watch brand, it’s hard to even consider developing a new ultra-thin mechanical wristwatch without first having the right movement,” emphasizes Formex CEO Raphaël Granito. That’s why the company ventured into developing a modern, high-performance micro-rotor movement early on.

“Of course, there are some fascinating micro-rotor calibers in the haute horlogerie sector, some of which would even be available to other brands. For us, however, it was clear that we wanted to remain in the significantly more affordable yet competitive segment for which Formex is known. At the same time, we didn’t want to compromise in any way on performance or wearing comfort. That’s why classic hand-wound movements were never an option.”

With a height of just 2.9 millimeters, the FX01 is not only exceptionally thin but also technically state-of-the-art: The Swiss-made caliber is COSC-certified, offers a 72-hour power reserve, and displays hours, minutes, and seconds. It is equipped with a tungsten micro-rotor, a flexible gear train system for backlash-free hand setting, and a silicon balance spring. (MSRP: €7,600)
