WATCH of the WEEK: Hanhart Thermosphere – A tool watch for firefighters and emergency responders

In light of numerous major fires and natural disasters around the world, the work of firefighters is increasingly drawing public attention. In keeping with this, Hanhart is introducing the “Thermosphere,” limited to 112 pieces.

For this special edition, Hanhart drew inspiration from the fire department’s respiratory protection monitoring system. The watch was developed in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters’ Association and features key time markers from a breathing apparatus operation on its rotating bezel. In this way, the model combines a rugged, operational aesthetic with a clear, functional concept.

The “Thermosphere” is based on Hanhart’s “Aquasphere” line, whose basic design has been further developed for the specific needs of firefighting personnel.

While the “Aquasphere” was developed for underwater navigation, the “Thermosphere” is inspired by operations characterized by heat, smoke, and limited visibility. The name is derived from the ancient Greek word “thermós” (heat).

The “Thermosphere” is designed with a consistent focus on functionality and durability—qualities that emergency responders must be able to rely on.

Limited to 112 units, this edition references the European emergency number for fire and rescue services.

The Inspiration: Time Spent on a Respiratory Protection Mission

During respiratory protection operations, the remaining breathing air is critical to safety and situational awareness. That is why the “Thermosphere” is designed around the defined time windows for respiratory protection monitoring and displays them directly on its bezel.

The concept was developed in collaboration with Stefan Hermann (Reutlingen Fire Department), Ralf Heizmann (Vöhrenbach Fire Department), and Hanhart CEO Simon Hall, who has been an active member of the volunteer fire department for many years.

A Functional Companion for Respiratory Protection Operations

The “Thermosphere” is designed to provide a clear visual representation of time. At its center is the rotating bezel with its distinctive triangular luminous indices. It is aligned with the time markers used in respiratory protection monitoring and enables intuitive readability. The highlighted minute hand supports this function and ensures quick orientation in low-visibility conditions.

At the start of a respiratory protection operation, the triangle on the bezel is aligned with the minute hand. This allows the maximum operating time—usually 30 or 60 minutes—to be read directly. Super-Luminova on the bezel, hands, and dial ensures readability even in the dark.

Color accents improve readability and give the watch its distinctive character. The emblem of the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters’ Association on the dial and case back, as well as the emergency number “112” designed as the 12 o’clock marker, underscore the watch’s close connection to the fire department. hanhart.com
