ArtyA Complexity Métiers d’Art: Two Cônillons in a Sapphire Case

ArtyA is extending its “Complexity” collection, unveiled this spring, into the realm of the Métiers d’Art. The new version, limited to nine pieces, retains the transparent sapphire case and the unusual architecture featuring two inclined Cônillon tourbillons. A new feature is the meticulous hand-finishing of the dial and movement, which lends the technically driven design significantly more depth and texture.

Handwork Instead of a New Complication

The Complexity Métiers d’Art is not a new technical design. The model builds on the Complexity presented at Watches & Wonders 2026, which INSIGHT LUXURY has already featured in its overview “A Lot of Buzz in Geneva—Tourbillons.” While that model focused on the two regulating mechanisms and the fully transparent case, ArtyA is now turning its attention to the movement’s finishes.

The finely sandblasted dial is entirely hand-engraved. Starting from the center, lines—each individually carved with a graver—radiate across the surface. Varying depths cause the pattern to change depending on the angle of the light. The applied hour markers are also beveled and polished by hand; their sides are finished with a grinding rod, while their tops remain sandblasted.

This approach continues in the movement. The tops of the bridges are sandblasted by hand, while the undersides are hammered. Additional features include polished chamfers, a pearl-finished base, an engraved serial number plate, and black rhodium-plated surfaces. According to ArtyA, laser engravings are limited to technical and regulatory markings. The aesthetic value thus lies less in additional decoration than in the contrasts between matte, relief-like, and high-gloss sections.

Two inclined tourbillons and a differential

The technical foundation remains the hand-wound Complexity-01 caliber, which ArtyA developed in collaboration with the complication specialist Purtec in Vallorbe. Its distinctive feature is the presence of two cônillons at 12 and 6 o’clock. Unlike in a classic tourbillon, the balance wheel moves along a conical path. Both cages complete a full rotation in 30 seconds and are connected via a differential.

The differential distributes the energy from the mainspring to the two regulating organs and simultaneously calculates an average value based on their rate. Thus, it is not only a visual link but also the mechanical heart of the design. The movement consists of 287 components and 44 jewels, operates at 3 hertz, and offers a power reserve of 50 hours.

The architecture is highlighted by a case crafted entirely from solid sapphire. It measures 42 × 48 × 13 millimeters and features domed sections above both cônillons that act as optical magnifiers. According to ArtyA, diamond-cutting the case takes more than 120 hours, and polishing it takes another 140 hours.

Mechanics Becomes a Workspace

This innovation demonstrates how an existing high complication can be further developed without redesigning the movement. ArtyA uses the dial, bridges, and mainplate as surfaces for traditional finishing, thereby shifting the perception of complexity: The double tourbillon remains the technical core, but for the first time, the traces of handcrafting take center stage alongside it.
