Roger Dubuis Excalibur Metamorph Merlin: The Magician in a Rose Gold Case
Roger Dubuis concludes its three-part narrative about the wizard Merlin with the Excalibur The Metamorph Merlin. Limited to 28 pieces, the watch combines a three-dimensional dial made up of 57 individually crafted elements with twelve sculpted knights and a rose gold case engraved by hand for the first time.
The third chapter of the Merlin trilogy
Following the 2024 Omniscient Merlin and the 2025 Enchanter Merlin comes a new interpretation of the wizard’s power of transformation. At its center is a landscape composed of varying heights and surfaces, resembling a dense forest. Its 57 blocks consist of green-coated elements, polished rose gold, transparent glass, and Crystalium.
The components, which vary in height, create depth and reflect light in different ways. Twelve Knights of the Round Table, each about six millimeters tall, are arranged around the scene. Each figure is crafted from rose gold and finished by hand. Roger Dubuis estimates that the finishing process for a single knight alone takes about three days.
Merlin appears on the side of the case
The 45-millimeter case is made of 18-karat rose gold and is 16.87 millimeters high. For the first time in a watch from this collection, the sides feature hand-engraving. It depicts Merlin both in human form and as a white stag, extending the theme of metamorphosis from the dial to the case.
The crown guards are reminiscent of a sword hilt, echoing a recurring design motif in the Excalibur collection. A dark green calfskin strap with a quick-release system and a triple-fold rose gold clasp complement the color scheme of the dial. The watch is water-resistant to three bar.
Caliber RD821 with the Poinçon de Genève
Inside, the automatic in-house caliber RD821 is at work. It consists of 172 components, has 33 jewels, and operates at a frequency of four hertz. The power reserve is 48 hours. Through the sapphire crystal case back, the skeletonized rotor—which rotates 360 degrees—is visible; its design is reminiscent of medieval stained-glass windows.
Roger Dubuis employs 14 different hand-finishing techniques in the movement. The caliber bears the Geneva Seal, which defines the design and functional criteria for movements manufactured in Geneva.
