BVSU statistics in July: Slump in jewellery, watches win

The new import and export statistics for watches and jewelry for July are in. The figures, provided by the Federal Association of Jewelry, Watches and Related Silverware, show a lull in jewelry sales, but also a significant increase in watches.

Jewelry in July: Visible summer lull

Jewelry, which has always performed quite well in terms of numbers this year, shows a significant decline in imports and exports in July – a circumstance that may be due to the typical summer slump. 

The export volume for jewelry was 550 million euros in July. In July, it was 628 million euros – a decline of 14.1 percent. However, year-on-year, exports are still performing very well, with figures showing an increase of 20.4 percent. Import figures look somewhat better: the volume here is 508 million euros, a decrease of 5.1 percent compared to the previous month of June, when the volume was 535 million euros. Year-on-year, both imports and exports are up 20.4 percent.

Winners this summer: The watch industry

After months of sluggishness, watch sales are picking up significantly in July. With an increase of 10.5 percent compared to June, exports of watches and watch parts are looking very good. In figures, this corresponds to a volume of 176 million euros. 

Imports of watches and watch parts are estimated at a volume of 231 million euros, which corresponds to an increase of 5.2 percent compared to the previous month of June.
