Mondaine expands its Classic Collection with a Day-Date model
This new addition to the collection features a slightly larger format, which improves readability and everyday usability while remaining true to Mondaine’s minimalist design philosophy.
Clear design and improved readability
Inspired by the official station clock of Swiss Federal Railways, the new “Classic Day Date 40 mm” features a clear white dial with striking black hour and minute indices and Mondaine’s iconic red second hand. The newly introduced large day and date windows at 3 o’clock ensure comfortable readability at a glance. Precision is ensured by a reliable Swiss-made quartz movement.
Sustainable materials and versatility
Mondaine uses sustainable materials not only for the 40-millimeter case made from recycled stainless steel, but also for the 20-millimeter-wide strap. This is made from grape leather, which is produced from by-products of wine production.
The origins of the “Classic Collection”
The “Classic Collection” dates back to 1986, when Mondaine first launched the design of the official Swiss Federal Railways station clock as a wristwatch.
The Swiss railway station clock was originally developed in 1944 by Hans Hilfiker, an engineer with Swiss Federal Railways. His design marked a significant departure from the ornate Art Nouveau dials, moving towards a minimalist approach with a white background, hour and minute markings in the form of simple black rectangles, geometric hands, and finally a distinctive red second hand with a red disc.
This disc, inspired by the paddle used by train dispatchers to direct trains at stations, made it possible to read the clock accurately to the second, even from a distance.
The clarity, simplicity, and high legibility of this design have made the Swiss Federal Railways station clock an internationally recognized icon. Mondaine’s “Classic Collection” has brought this design to the wrist and remained true to its principles through numerous reinterpretations in various sizes, colors, and materials.
