Dive Watches – From Professional Gear to a Popular Tool Watch
Whether you’re afraid of water or a passionate recreational diver, whether you’re a landlubber or a water baby—when it comes to dive watches, most watch enthusiasts agree: Hardly any other tool watch looks quite as good on land as it does underwater.

There are an estimated five to six million active recreational divers worldwide who dive at least once a year. Recent scientific studies estimate that approximately 50 million recreational dives are made annually. The economic impact is significant: Studies estimate that 8.9 to 13.6 million people worldwide participate in dive tourism (scuba diving and snorkeling), generating direct revenue of approximately 0.9 to 3.2 billion U.S. dollars per year. A portion of this spending also goes toward diving equipment—including dive computers and classic dive watches.
Today, the latter are mostly used as a backup to dive computers like Garmin’s Descent X30 or as a visible symbol of their passion for diving. And many landlubbers wear them simply because they instantly create a sporty, dynamic look.

What makes a diving watch a diving watch?
ISO 6425 is the best-known standard for diving watches. There are also other standards that set additional or, in some cases, stricter requirements. These include, for example, DIN 8306.
Blancpain: Fifty Fathoms Tech
In the 1950s, Blancpain introduced the unidirectional rotating bezel for measuring dive time—now an indispensable feature of modern dive watches. In 2023, the Manufacture further developed this concept with a 3-hour bezel designed for longer dives. To achieve this, the classic GMT function was adapted so that it rotates in three hours instead of 24. The result: a 3-hour hand with a matching scale that precisely displays the total dive duration. ISO 6425 Diver’s Watch Standard
ISO 6425 was introduced in 1996 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and defines the minimum requirements, test methods, and labeling criteria that a watch must meet in order to be designated as a genuine diver’s watch. It was last updated in 2018.
Resistance to water pressure: ISO 6425 requires a water resistance of at least 10 bar; however, the watch is also tested at 125 percent of the specified nominal pressure. A diver’s watch rated as water-resistant up to 20 bar must therefore withstand a test pressure of 25 bar—even though ISO 6425 only requires a minimum water resistance of 10 bar. In practice, nearly all ISO 6425-certified diver’s watches today are water-resistant to 20 or 30 bar.

Resistance to Condensation: The watch is placed on a hot plate at 40°C for 10 to 20 minutes. A drop of water (18–25°C) is then placed on the watch crystal and wiped away after one minute. No condensation is allowed to form on the inside.
G-Shock MR-G Frogman BF1000EB
The new “MRG-BF1000EB” draws inspiration from the brinicle, an extraordinary natural phenomenon in which ice stalactites form beneath the surface of polar seas. Also noteworthy is the faceted bezel made of Cobarion, an alloy approximately four times as hard as pure titanium. Resistance to temperature shocks: The watch is submerged in water 30 cm deep for 10 minutes at 40 °C, then at 5 °C, and finally back at 40 °C. There must be no more than one minute between each immersion. Water ingress or condensation is not permitted.
Doxa: SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler
Clive Cussler, the legendary novelist and adventurer who shared his passion for Doxa’s “SUB” with his hero Dirk Pitt, would have celebrated his 95th birthday on July 15, 2026. Corrosion Resistance: The watch must be resistant to corrosion caused by seawater. To test this, the watch is submerged in a salt solution with a concentration of 30 g/l for 24 hours. Afterward, the case and components are inspected for any changes; in particular, the functionality of the moving parts and the rotating bezel is checked.

Strength of the wristband: For this test, the wristband must be securely attached to the case. It must withstand a force of 200 N applied to each spring bar in opposite directions.

Dive Time Display: An essential feature of dive watches is the accurate display of dive time. The watch should allow the diver to quickly read the elapsed time during a dive. This is usually done via a rotating bezel, which is set before the dive begins. For safety reasons, the bezel can only be rotated in one direction, so that the displayed remaining dive time cannot be accidentally shortened.

Functionality Check: The watch must indicate that it is running even in the dark. This is usually achieved by a second hand coated with luminous material or another clearly visible indicator of operation.
